The Windspeed Philosophy
As an athlete, Thys Wind continues to push himself hard because of his love for competition. Setting challenging goals within athletics and training towards such goals is his truest passion. With that said, however, he is fully aware of how that lifestyle has lent itself to being healthy physically, spiritually, and mentally. Exercising for the sake of exercising has never worked for Thys, and so he feels fortunate to have found a way by which being physically fit is really just a byproduct of what he loves doing the most.
During the many years that he worked in fitness centers, Thys came in contact with lots of people that felt trapped by exercising for the sake of working towards the most common health-related goals such as losing weight, improving blood pressure, etc. While the pursuit of such goals is noble, for various reasons many people fail to reach their destination. WindSpeed Endurance Training was established in part to reach out to these individuals and get them back on track in a new and positive way. WindSpeed is here to coach not only the naturally-gifted athletes, but the average “undiscovered” adult athletes as well. By developing you as an endurance athlete, WindSpeed will surely propel you towards better health and an improved quality of life.
There is not a single training methodology that WindSpeed embraces more than the concept of cross-training. All endurance athletes are aware of the importance of varying their training intensity and duration over the course of any training cycle. Many, however, do not vary their mode of training often enough, if at all. Many runners, for example, train for their respective races by only running - sometimes as often as 6 times a week! While this sort of consistent training is great for the cardiovascular system, it is destructive to your joints and it is a guaranteed way to shorten your career as a runner and triathlete. The WindSpeed way of training is all about variety and utilizing the benefits of cross-training. Cross-training is a broad term that includes, but is not limited to, all forms of continuous cardiovascular exercise, strength and flexibility training, and the various disciplines that improve the mind-body connection. Obviously all Turnkey Triathlon Training Solutions and Partnership Triathlon Training programs are focused on cross-training, but so are the Turnkey and Partnership Running Training programs. If you’re a skeptic, that’s o.k. because WindSpeed guarantees that in a few months you too will be a believer in the concept of cross-training! The bottom line is that cross-training allows the body to recover and become stronger, and it is perhaps the best way to a higher level of physical performance and endurance!
Safety Is Our Goal
WindSpeed’s coaching style will be centered on keeping athletes safe and injury-free. Accidents and/or nagging injuries that result from improper training often lead to the abandonment of one’s sport of choice. By providing safe and structured training programs, and by helping athletes set specific, measurable, attainable, and realistic goals, we hope to be able to make the sport fun. Fun leads to retention, and it inevitably proves to be addictive!
WindSpeed will always be mindful that we are not just training bodies, but people. People with stressful jobs, family obligations, and many other pressing commitments. We will therefore strive to be flexible, understanding, and realistic. We’ll aspire to be a mentor and role-model for all athletes, just like our former coaches were to us.
All USA Triathlon coaches sign the U.S. Olympic Committee Coaching Ethics Code, which stresses coaching competence, thorough knowledge of the sport, integrity, professional responsibility, respect for all, concern for others’ welfare, and responsible coaching.
